Post-processing adjustments can be as minor as simply increasing the contrast in a photo, or as major as adding or subtracting people and/or objects to/from the original photo.
The great news about digital image-editing (which includes post-processing, and more) is that the market is extremely competitive, which means better products at lower prices. There are several free programs that are actually quite intuitive, such as Picasa for PCs, and iPhoto for Macs.
