Prepare Photos for Display on the Web

Using Microsoft Photo Editor 3.01

  1. To scan a new photo in:
FILE > SCAN IMAGE. Choose COLOR DOCUMENT - BETTER QUALITY, select 75DPI from the drop-down RES menu, and put a check mark in front of AUTOCROP.
  2. Crop (and straighten) the photo:
IMAGE > ROTATE > Choose BY DEGREE and enter a number. Below that, choose whether you want to rotate the image clockwise or counter-clockwise.
    select icon
Choose the SELECT icon and draw a rectangle (from upper left to lower right) of the area you'd like to keep in the photo. You can use the corner "handles" to adjust the selection to your exact liking. Now go to IMAGE > CROP and click OK.
  3. Make color and contrast adjustments:
    IMAGE > AUTOBALANCE
  4. Resize the photo:
    1. resize window
    2. From the Menu Bar, ADJUST > RESIZE.
    3. In the UNITS drop-down menu (lower right of resize window), choose PIXELS. Now change either the width or the height. As a general rule, for Web viewing, try to keep the width no more than 580 pixels, and the height no more than 420 pixels.
    4. As long as the box in front of ALLOW DISTORTION remains UNchecked, the size of your photo will change proportionately.
  5. Sharpen the resized photo:
EFFECTS > SHARPEN. This is a very strong filter. Start by setting the slider to 1.
  6. Save the photo in .jpg format:
FILE > SAVE AS. Choose JPG File Interchange Format from the SAVE AS TYPE drop-down menu near the bottom of the SAVE AS window. Now, just below that, click the MORE button. Set the JPG QUALITY slider (near the bottom of the window) to about 67. (A lower number means a lower image quality and lower file size; a higher number means better image quality and higher file size.)
